Better quality image - the colour in the first I uploaded was very muted, you can see the colour in his eyes better here : )

I don't know if it's just me, but I think the eyes have a thoughtful look about them, perhaps because one eye seems to be open slightly more than the other. That, and the tilt of the head make me think the lion has just seen or heard something unusual.
One thing I do wonder is if the nose and mouth are skewed slightly to the right compared to the reference image (if one was used). It's not extremely obvious, but I downloaded the image and reversed it and the skewing effect was more apparent. Perhaps I only notice it because I'm self-conscious of skewed features in my own drawings.
